Advocates press Doral to drop its 287(g) agreement with ICE

Plus MIA's CEO speaks at a Doral lunch Wednesday, and Miam Café and Sanguich plan Doral spots.

Doral's police chief says the city doesn't even have officers trained for the immigration work its ICE agreement allows, and the council didn't take the deal up at its meeting last Wednesday.

The big story

During public comment at last Wednesday's council meeting, one speaker said local family-owned businesses report sales drops as high as 70% because frightened residents won't leave home. The signatures advocates brought to that meeting asked the city to end its 287(g) partnership with ICE, which lets local police take on certain immigration enforcement tasks under ICE supervision. Mayor Christi Fraga said the city joined because its lawyers advised that it was required, and she has sent the State Attorney's office a letter demanding clarification. Immigration attorneys say it never was. Southern Poverty Law Center attorney Jeanette Infante said Florida Statute 908.11 does not require Doral to sign on, and Sam Lester of ACLU Florida said the city is free to leave. Lester also said the governor, despite his threats, has no power to remove city officials over it. Fraga said Doral's police have not collaborated with ICE and never did the training. Police Chief Matthew Castillo went further: "We don't enforce immigration at all." He said no officers are trained for that work and that rescinding the agreement would change nothing about how the department enforces the law. So the city has signed an enforcement agreement it says it isn't using. The agreement itself wasn't discussed that evening, and nothing suggests the city intends to exit.

Miam Café is coming to One Park Square

Miam Café is taking 4,441 square feet of ground-floor space in the office building at 3470 NW 82nd Ave., a lease JLL announced in August. The menu covers breakfast, lunch, snacks, and food and drinks made to order, and the café includes a boutique corner stocking wines, honeys, oils and other goods from around the U.S. No opening date has been announced. The brand already runs spots in Wynwood, Coral Gables, Biscayne and Fort Lauderdale, under the motto "Simple, fresh and natural!" For people who work in the 281,785-square-foot building, that means a lunch option downstairs. Recent leases have pushed One Park Square to about 90% occupancy, and around 29,000 square feet is still available.

Sanguich plans a Doral location

A state filing shows Sanguich Doral LLC registered in March 2026, setting up a separate business for a Doral shop. That puts the plan on paper, not just in conversation. Married founders Rosa Romero and Daniel Figueredo are working on several new locations for their Cuban sandwich brand. Speaking on A Day in Miami, the couple named Doral alongside Wynwood, Dadeland and Miami Lakes. No opening date has been confirmed. Today's shops sit in Aventura Mall, Bayside Marketplace, Coral Gables, Little Haiti and Little Havana, so a Doral store would be the brand's first in the city.
